Why Search Engine Submission Services are a Scam
10/18/2006
In this day and age of competitive search engine optimization services (SEO), it’s often difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. There are many, many search engine optimization service providers out there that have no intention of doing anything more than taking advantage of you desire to bring traffic to the website you have poured your heart and soul into.
It’s understandably difficult for the layman to know who is legitimate and who is not. After all, if you knew how to optimize your website on your own, you wouldn’t be looking for a search engine optimization service, would you?
So how do you know who is really going to make an effort to optimize your site for better search engine results page (SERP) rankings? There are some tell-tale signs. The most obvious is the truly criminal ‘Search Engine Submission’ service.
Please, do not be fooled by ‘Search Engine Submission’ services. They are a total scam, they provide you with nothing. Absolutely nothing. Anyone who attempts to sell this service to you should be locked up. I don’t know how they can sleep at night.
Let me explain this scam with an analogy. Paying someone to submit your search engine is like paying someone to assign a street address to your business. You already have a street address, right? It was assigned to you by your local government. And how does having an address (which you already had anyway) bring business to your door? It doesn’t. People need to know that your business exists, and you need to convince them to do business with you. And that takes effort.
The second part of the ‘Search Engine Submission’ scam is that they claim you will get higher rankings in the search engine by using their submission service. They’ll probably have the marketing angle down pretty good to try and get you to bite. But believe me, this is as useful to you as a business as an artificial lure is to a fish for lunch. They might give it a fancy name, or have some ridiculous claims and testimonials. Don’t believe it.
I want to educate you on what it really takes to get ranked, and get good SERP rankings. First of all, the search engines need to find you. The best, and most effective, way to do this is to have another site link to you. That’s it. As long as that site is indexed, the search engines will find your link, and you will be indexed. Once you’re indexed, the search engine crawlers will revisit your site periodically and look for new content.
Once the search engine is aware of your site, you’re indexed. Let me make that clear. Your site is either indexed, or it’s not. Resubmitting every month is an exercise in futility. You would be telling them something that they already knew. So why do many of these ‘Search Engine Submission’ services require monthly or yearly fees for this service? Because they are trying to take your money for nothing in return.
Obviously, anyone who would claim to offer a service that does not provide any actual value is not a trustworthy individual or organization. This is supported by the fact that most of these ‘Search Engine Submission’ services even go as far to sell your email address. That’s right, in most of these scams you are actually paying them to spam you!
If you are currently paying someone for ‘Search Engine Submission’ services, cancel it immediately. And end your professional relationship with them permanently if possible. It is important to market your website, and to get relevant traffic to it. Just be sure you are getting value for your web marketing dollars.
What to look for in a legitimate search engine optimization service is another topic that is, and will continue to be, covered in other blog entries on our site. For the purposes of this entry I will break it down to the basic elements. Marketing a website takes work. If it were as simple as paying some service to submit you every month, then everyone would do it. And if everyone did it, then it would have no value. You have to do more than your competitors in order to outrank them in the search engines. That means more and better content, more and better inbound links, better selection of keywords, etc.
In conclusion I want to make it clear that there are many people out there ready to take your money for search engine optimization services that have no intention (or ability) of providing you with any actual value. Do not be fooled by ‘Search Engine Submission’ services, or other such scams. Carefully consider your search engine optimization service company, and weigh what they will actually be providing you with. Don’t be fooled by slick talk, marketing gimmicks, and catchy names.
